Explains informed consent for surgery, patients' rights/responsibilities, and preoperative/postoperative instructions. Obtains necessary signatures. |
Develops a plan of care for the patient based on assessment data and implements admission care (e.g., evaluates chart, administers medication). |
Identifies the patient and correct surgical intervention/ procedure and surgical site according to policy/procedure and communicates such information to all members of the surgical team. |
Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before start of procedure and positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure. |
Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in each phase of the surgical or procedural experience. |
Reviews postoperative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with patient and caregiver including appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home and conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care. |
Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations. |
