Description:
Duke Health is currently seeking candidates experienced in sports physical therapy to work full-time with Duke University DI Athletics, as we are expanding PT services currently provided. This will be a hybrid position working with football & olympic sports. The football role will directed by the Primary Football Sports PT, as needed. The role with olympic sports will be serving a variety of student-athletes with their rehabilitation needs. Demonstrated experience & competence working with collegiate and/or professional football and olympic sports is strongly preferred. Dual credentialing in athletic training is preferred, but not necessary. This position requires a great deal of flexibility with regards to the practitioner's time, schedule, and duties. Time demands include early mornings & frequent weekends, with occasional evenings, & team travel. Weekend PRN supplemental pay is provided. Applicants need to be eligible for a North Carolina physical therapy license and certified/licensed athletic trainer, if applicable.

Occupational Summary
Provide physical therapy services to patients/clients who have impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease, or other causes; provide prevention and wellness services, including screenings and health promotion. The practitioner serves as a resource person for the team and the department: participates in orientation of new staff therapists, physicians and other health personnel. The practitioner participates in teaching activities for physical therapy and other health related students. The physical therapist works within practice guidelines as defined by North Carolina state law.

Demonstrate & articulate sound clinical reasoning in synthesizing complex evaluation data identifying diagnosis and developing a comprehensive plan of care.
Develop and update appropriate plan of care in collaboration with the patient/family and related to the person's age and lifestyle with measurable long- and short-term goals and a defined discharge plan.
Understand the role of physical therapy in the context of the patient's age, total needs perspective and environment.
Perform age appropriate competency skills in area of practice and with respect to individual patient's problem list.
Follow intervention protocols and alter plan of care appropriately.
Discharge patient when goals have been met or medical necessity is no longer warrants intervention.
Establish provisions for continuing services/follow-up as needed.
Meet competency skills for evaluations in area of practice.
Consistently meet patient care productivity standard as established for job classification.
Work cooperatively with supervisors and peers to contribute to the overall productivity of the team.
Utilize support personnel (aides, sr aides, assistants) as appropriate and available.
Actively support and participate in patient coverage efforts across all divisions within the department as necessary.
Assess the learning needs and capabilities of patients and caregivers.
Initiate patient and family education in a timely manner relative to age, LOS, readiness to learn, and emotional status.
Utilize appropriate methods and materials for effective learning, monitoring response to education, and adapting program appropriately.
Ensure that patient/family understands when and how to access further intervention.
Ensure patient care documentation is timely, legible, and efficient. That documentation is concise, pertinent, and meets the profession's and department's documentation standards.
Ensure oral reporting is clear, concise, relevant, and timely.
Perform all required data collection for the department accurately and within expected time frame.
Ensure peer review standards are consistently met.
Provide clinical education experiences for Division I Sports PT Fellow(s). Adjust supervisory techniques for individual Fellow needs.
Provide outreach and learning activities as requested which may include: in-services on related topics, generating referrals, interacting with volunteers or visitors.
Participate in data collection for research activities to enhance clinical outcomes.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Position-Specific Duties - Athletic Medicine
The position will be responsible for providing physical therapy services to Division I student-athletes & staff involved in football & various Olympic sports (non-basketball). As part of a multi-disciplinary team, this position requires the daily collaboration with the greater medical and athletic department staff including certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, orthopedic and primary care physicians, sports performance staff, sports science staff, dieticians, psychologists, team coaches, support staff, and family members of student-athletes and/or staff.
Design and/or implementation of injury prevention programs
Treatment and rehabilitation of post-operative & non-operative cases
Patient/staff education relevant to their condition and/or prevention of injury/illness and/or healthy lifestyle for the physically active population
Use of and contribution to sports science data, where applicable
Serve as a clinical mentor/instructor for Division I Sports PT Fellowship, if applicable
Serve as a clinical instructor/educator for physical therapy and other allied health students, helping to guide experiences in order to provide a positive learning environment
Participation and contribution in continuing education for self and members of the Athletic Medicine staff, as well as the general profession regarding athletic medicine
Team practice/competition/event coverage based on staffing needs as determined by the Director of Athletic Rehabilitation and the Executive Director of Athletic Medicine
The practitioner will be of high character and will demonstrate aptitude and excellence in: interpersonal skills and relationship building, conflict management & resolution, verbal and written communication, decision-making, and thoughtful evidence-based treatment algorithms.
This position is responsible for upholding the integrity of Duke Health, Duke University, and Duke University Athletic Association intercollegiate athletics program. This position is responsible for insuring their involvement with Duke Health and Duke University Athletic Association activities maintains the integrity of Duke's reputation and does not negatively impact the relationship between the University and its faculty, staff, students and alumni. The practitioner, while working in the Athletic Department facilities, will be an employee of Duke Health, Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. The sports physical therapist will report to the Director of Athletic Rehabilitation. In turn, the Director of Athletic Rehabilitation reports to Duke Health Director of Rehabilitation Services and Duke Athletics Executive Director of Athletic Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
*Master's or Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy
*Graduate from an accredited APTA curriculum.
*Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in athletic training with NATABOC certification preferred, not required.
Experience
*3+ years demonstrated competence working with high-level collegiate and/or professional athletes. *Record of outstanding communication and interpersonal skills required.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
*Current or eligible for Physical Therapist license in North Carolina.
*Current (or eligible for) State of North Carolina Physical Therapy (and Athletic Trainer, if appropriate) licensure required.
*If non-ATC, proof of current EMR certification
*Current CPR/AED/BLS certification
